Hazardous Chemical Substances Course

1 day – NQF Level 3

Hazardous and toxic substances are defined as those chemicals present in the workplace which are capable of causing harm. In this definition, the term chemicals include dusts, mixtures, and common materials such as paints, fuels, and solvents.

This course is aimed at all delegates who have had no or little previous knowledge and experience in the legal aspects of the Occupational Health & Safety Act Regulations on Hazardous Chemical Substances (HCS).

Target Group

This a specialist course for employees dealing with HCS, laboratory employees and personnel involved in the ordering, transportation, storage and operation of these chemicals.

Pre-Requisites

Working experience in the HCS-field.

Course Objectives

The aim of the Advantage A.C.T Hazardous Chemical Substances course is to equip the candidate with knowledge and skill to understand the legal and practical context of the regulation and the application thereof in the working environment.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, with the use of the relevant course documentation and facilitator material, the candidate will be able to:

  • Identify, discuss, explain and participate in a HCS program in the working environment.
  • Classify substances.
  • Identify information on chemicals.
  • Discuss training needs and requirements.
  • Explain and interpret Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Discuss the duties of people exposed to HCS.
  • Perform a basic risk assessment.
  • Explain biological monitoring of exposed employees.
  • Discuss biological monitoring and medical surveillance.
  • Identify records.
  • Identify control measures.
  • Select Personal Protective Equipment and discuss facilities.
  • Participate in labeling, packaging, transporting and storage requirements.
  • What are special measures?
  • Identify disposal requirements of Hazardous Chemical Substances.

Learning Material

Delegates will use the Hazardous Chemical Substances course manual.

Language

This course is presented in the English language.

Certification & Assignment

You will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance on completion of this course.
