HAZOP Course
(Hazard and Operability Study Course) 4 days – NQF Level 5
Hazard and Operability studies is a methodology for identifying and dealing with potential problems in industrial processes, particularly those which would create a hazardous situation or a severe impairment of the process.
It is commonly known as HAZOP. Some users call it Hazard and Operability Analysis. It is said to be the most widely used method of hazard analysis in the process industries, notably the chemical, petrochemical and nuclear industries.
The method applies to processes, existing or planned, for which design information is available. This commonly includes a Process flow diagram, which is examined in small sections, such as individual items of equipment or pipes between them.
Target Group
- Engineers
- Risk Assessors
- Operators
- Management
- Employees responsible for HIRA
Pre-Requisites
The learner must:
- Have at least two years practical experience in an appropriate workplace setting.
- Possess knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of SHEQ management and risk control principles, standards and procedures.
- Have access to appropriate company drawings, documentation, operating procedures and communication channels with relevant personnel – e.g. engineers.
Course Objectives
On successful completion of this course the learner will be able to participate meaningfully in a hazard operability study in the workplace.
Course Outcomes
This course aims to equip the learner with the fundamental knowledge and application skills necessary to participate in and / or perform a HAZOP study.
This will be achieved by performing interactive tasks, to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Identifying the critical issues and procedures that should be addressed in a HAZOP.
- Understanding the purpose and scope of using HAZOP as an analytical tool.
- Defining the design intent.
- Breaking the process down into sections.
- Identifying significant hazards and potential causes of deviations.Examining the consequences of deviations.
- Investigation risk control options to meet SHEQ standards and meet the design intent.
- Recording and reporting findings and recommendations for remedial action.
Learning Material
Delegates will use the HAZOP course manual.
Language
This course is presented in the English language.
Course Requirements
It is a strong recommendation to bring a laptop with to the course to use during the week. An example of a process flow from your organization is critical to bring along.
