Health and Safety Representative Course
(Also known as the Workplace Inspection course) 1 day – NQF level 3
A SHE management system is not effective without the employees being represented. The Health and Safety representative is legally required to be nominated and elected by his/her fellow employees and is their voice in terms of health and safety needs and requirements. The representative is the eyes and the ears of the employees.
Through continual inspections and meetings within the working environment, hazards and risks can be pro-actively identified and rectified, creating a safe and healthy workplace.

- Newly elected Health and Safety or SHE/ SHEQ representatives.
- Current representatives or Management representatives
- Contractors
- Health and Safety committee members
Pre-Requisites
The following courses should successfully be completed before attempting the Health and Safety representative course:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act Overview or,
- Mine Health and Safety Act Overview courses.
Course Objectives
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to explain and document structured workplace inspections, observations and findings. These will be reported to and evaluated by Safety and Health committee members before being submitted to management for corrective action and in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
Course Outcomes
At the end of this course with the use of the Health and Safety representative/Workplace Inspection course manuals the candidate will be able to:
- Explain the duties and responsibilities of employers, employees, and Health and Safety representatives and committees in promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment and community.
- Discuss the general hazard management steps that should be included in company inspections, evaluations and reporting systems.
- Identify workplace hazards in the context of your workplace and evaluate your conformance to legislated standards.
- Record deviations and make recommendations for corrective actions.
- Participate effectively in Health and Safety committee meetings and monitor corrective action procedures.
Learning Material
The Health and Safety representative/Workplace Inspection course manual and applicable forms will be used during this course.
Language
This course is presented in the English language. By prior arrangement, on-site courses for groups of ten (10) or more delegates can be presented in African Languages.
Course Requirements
Prior Health & Safety experience will be advantageous. It is much more effective to use your own company documentation during training. Bring your Health and Safety appointment letter; example of the committee meeting minutes; inspection sheet and any other related documentation to this training session, if possible.
PPE requirements for the practical session are: safety shoes, hearing protection, hard hat and safety glasses. Failure to bring this equipment will lead to being excluded from the practical session.
Certification & Assignment
You will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance on completion of this course or, you may elect to submit an assignment and will on successful completion, be issued with a Certificate of Competence.
This course forms part of the SHEQ Industry or Mining Career Path Development Plan towards supervisor or management development. The next steps in this development include the HIRA, Incident investigation, Health and Safety Technical Skills for Supervisors, JSA/SOP/CTA and SHEQMAN courses.
