Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment Course
2 days – NQF Level 4
Risk assessment is the foundation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Mine Health and Safety Act. Risk Analysis is the identification of hazards and risks that may affect the health and safety of employees, visitors and contractors.
Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA) also promotes a pro-active approach towards effective SHEQ management. This approach supports responsible and sustainable resource management leading to improved profit margins.
Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to identify, weight, and assess Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental hazards and participate in baseline and continuous multi-disciplinary HIRA activities.

Pre-Requisites
Delegates must be employed in, or have access to, a work situation. It is important to have access to copies of Acts, Standards, Regulations, and Codes of Practices that are relevant to the scope of this course. This will assist in the completion of practical activities and assignments.
The following courses should successfully be completed before attempting the HIRA course:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act or Mine Health and Safety Act Overview Course
Course Objectives
To equip delegates with the knowledge and skill to be able to identify, weight, and assess Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental hazards as well as participate in baseline and continuous multi-disciplinary HIRA activities.
Course Outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- Identify significant hazards in the workplace.
- Identify the potential impact that selected hazards could have on employees, others, and the environment.
- Interpret and allocate weights to existing exposure levels and the “potential for growth” against documented standards.
- Identify and initiate suitable risk management and control methods and procedures (engineering followed by administrative and PPE controls.)
- Inform all at risk parties about the nature, cause and effect of uncontrolled hazard exposures.
- Initiate effective risk control measures, procedures and review.
Learning Material
Delegates will use the HIRA course manual and HIRA forms.
Language
This course is presented in the English language.
Course Requirements
A practical session is included in this course. The following PPE requirements are essential for this session: safety shoes, hearing protection, hard hat and safety glasses. Failure to bring this equipment will lead to being excluded from the practical session. NO open shoes/sandals and skirts/dresses are allowed for the practical day, please.
Certification & Assignment
You will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance on completion of this course. You may elect to submit an assignment and will, on successful completion, be issued with a Certificate of Competence.
